Bees suffer cup final heartbreak

2nd May 2008

Beesands Rovers lost 3-1 to Newton Abbot Spurs III in the Les Bishop Cup final at Dartington on Friday evening.

The Bees went behind after just 30 seconds when a long clearance from the Newton keeper cleared the Beesands defence and Lee Budd slotted the ball past Andy Partridge.

To their credit Bees started to get back into the game with Dave Lang causing problems on the right.

And on 17 minutes they drew level when a defence-splitting pass by skipper Rob Greenwood put Lang away, and his superb cross was deflected into the net by a Newton defender.

But the lead lasted just 13 minutes as Newton went 2-1 up thanks to a superb Tom Johnson goal.

Beesands pressed hard in the second half and wasted a glorious chance to level when Greenwood missed from close range.

And with just seconds remaining Newton secured the win with a third goal through Greg Priscott.
